Student Visas for Academic or Vocational Study in the US
Under United States immigration law, people from other countries who want to study in the U.S. must get a student visa before they will be allowed to enter the United States.
Before you can get a student visa, you must provide proof that you have been accepted into an American school and that you have the financial resources needed to pay your school and living expenses. The type of student visa you need to apply for depends upon the type of school you will be attending:
- F Student Visas allow foreign-born people to enter the United States for academic study in colleges, universities, high schools, and other educational institutions.
- M Student Visas are for people who want to pursue nonacademic or vocational studies in the United States.
If you are planning to study in the U.S., it is important that you apply for your student visa early on, as it can take a long time to obtain your visa.
Other Types of Temporary Nonimmigrant Visas
- B-1 Business Visitor Visas allow business visitors to enter the country to attend conferences or conventions, negotiate contracts, or meet with business associates
- B-2 Tourist Visas allow people to enter the U.S. for pleasure trips, tourism and to receive medical treatment at American hospitals or medical facilities.
- J-1 Exchange Visas allow exchange visitors to enter the United States
- H-1B Visas allow workers in specialty occupations to work in the United States temporarily.

- U Visas allow certain crime victims, their spouses and children to remain in the United States for 3 years, if the state certifies that they are needed to testify in court or have cooperated with police, law enforcement, and the prosecutor.
In addition to assisting you with your initial visa application and preparing you for your interview, our lawyers can also help you apply for an extension of your temporary visa.
